My Top Films

Being an avid film buff, i decided to start a blog on what films make me tick, below is a list of what i consider to be the greatest films ever made. Please read my reviews on each film as i will give a sypnosis of the film, so without a moment to spare and in no particular order these are

Shawshank Redemption (Drama)

I will start with one of my top five movies of all time, this film is a truly inspiring film and the two central characters are brilliantly portrayed by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, it is the story of a banker (Robbins) who is found guilty of his wife and her lover, although he cant remember doing it as he was drunk at the time. To start with the banker is sexually assaulted while in prison and then is in favour with the warden as he can save the staff of the prison money through his banking skills, this is a truly remarkable film and should not be missed.

Ice Cold in Alex (War)

Based on true events this is a tale of a drunken army captain who has to deliver an ambulance to Alexandria in Northern Africa, during 1942 across the desert, as the British and Germans were pushing each other all over the desert the front lines change day to day so our hero is unaware who they will encounter along the way, after getting through two german patrols suspicion arises as they may have a traitor in their team, brilliant ending with the team having their ice cold beer having been stuck in the hot desert for days.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (Western)

Our hero is a farmer when renegade union soldiers kill Joseys wife & son, he then takes up with a confederate renegade band to avenge his family, as the american civil war comes to an end, the rebel band carry on fighting until they are told by their leader to surrender, our hero refuses to surrender and sets about killing his familys killers. This film is funny in particular as a bunch of reprobates seem to be tagging along with him, including a mingy dog, that he keeps spitting on.

Atonement (Drama)

This film is based in the mid thirties a rich man with two daughters gives his maids son an education, the son is taken with the eldest daughter and an affair ensues, on the same day, the younger sister witnessess something (or does she) that will affect the three of them for the rest of their lives. This film depicts the horrible scenes of Dunkirk in the summer of 1940. A brilliant film and a must see to take your spouse to see.

Goodfellas (Gangster)

This film is based on true events, it tells the story of Henry Hill (Played by Ray Liotta) a true life gangster who acts as a witness against the mob, the story is told in retrospect, from the rise of a 14 year kid who does jobs for the mafia, until his eventual arrest and placement into the witness protection programme. There are excellent performances from Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as Liottas partners in crime, this movie is without doubt a the greatest gangster film ever made, as it tells the story of the foot soldiers in the mob, unlike the Godfather that tells the story from the angle of the top man in the mafia.

Schindlers List (Drama)

Based on true events, this film tells the chilling tale of inhumanity and the one man who made a stand against it, the story unfolds when a German industrialist make profit from jewish slave labour during world war 2, it becomes evident to the jews that although this man Oskar Schindler is well in with the nazis, he actually cares for them and if you work for him you are safe from the death camps. as a result of the actions of this man over 6000 descendants from the 1100 that he saved are alive today. excellent viewing.

Die Hard (Action)

A proper action film that has you on the edge of your seat and glued to the box, Detective John Mclane is a New York Cop who is invited to his estranged wifes christmas work do on christmas eve, while he is there a 12 terrorists seize the building, being a police officer is natural instincts do not kick in and he is scared, after only being forced into a fight with one of the terrorists he fights back. Typical blokey film.

Saving Private Ryan (War)

I never ever understood why my grandad would not talk about world war 2 but in the first twenty minutes of watching this film he was the first person I thought about, this film does what no other war film can project, what a waste war is, it does not glorify war in any way and shows the courage of a bunch of american soldiers who have to find a private ryan, so he can go home to his mother as his three other brothers have been killed elsewhere in war, when they eventually find him he is reluctant to go home and insists on continuing the ensuing battle, watch out for Vin Diesel in an early role.
